Fundraising at Belper North Mill

You may not realise it but we’re a registered charity. Your visit is greatly valued and supports our work as an independent educational and historical charity, but there are lots of other ways you can help us.  For almost 30 years we ran a museum and our visitors were able to experience and learn about the history of the Derwent Valley – The valley that changed the world. In 2022 due to the loss of supporting grants we were forced to close the museum but as a visitor you will still be able to learn about the history of the Belper Mills, the Strutt Family, the Mill Workers and the vital role they all played in the Industrial Revolution through our heritage walks and tours. Running the museum cost around £100,000 per year, operating tours only from Archway House has significantly reduced our costs but without any grant funding we are very reliant on ticket sales and forecast we will be operating at a loss for the foreseeable future. Donations therefore will be a vital contribution in keeping the heritage offer in Belper alive, until the whole site development plans are agreed and a new financially viable Heritage Centre is established.

Here are some of the things we could do with your donations.

Donating £5 will buy the specialist packaging materials to help us preserve our world renowned collections for future generations.

Donating £10 will help buy a telescopic window cleaner, to keep our upper floor windows maintained for guest aesthetics.

Donating £20 will buy the Educational resources we need to regularly replenish when working with young people.

Donating £50 help buy us flood equipment: as a water powered mill, flooding is an issue we regularly face. Equipment to help protect our collections is desperately needed.

£100 would buy us a dehumidifier for our stores to help keep our collections in pristine condition.

A donation of £200 would enable us to buy period costume for our school groups to use whilst here to replicate the working conditions of the mill.

A larger donation of £500 would enable us to get Queen Victoria’s socks that we have in our collection, cleaned and restored professionally so they are able to be put on display.

£1000 would buy us conservation equipment to ensure the survival of our collection for display in the future Heritage Centre, along with paying for training our volunteers to use this specialist equipment.
