Our collections focus on cotton spinning and hosiery, especially material relevant to technology and products from Belper, from the late 18th century to the present day and include:

  • Items that demonstrate the technology of cotton spinning from the domestic spinning wheel to the water frame and later developments;
  • Items that illustrate the processes and end-products of the Belper hosiery industry;
  • Information about the Strutt family and in particular William Strutt, the inventor of the fire-proof mill with an iron frame;
  • Photographs of mill workers and illustrations of hosiery production.
