What we have

Our collections focus on cotton spinning and hosiery, especially material relevant to technology and products from Belper, from the late 18th century to the present day and include:

  • Items that demonstrate the technology of cotton spinning from the domestic spinning wheel to the water frame and later developments;
  • Items that illustrate the processes and end-products of the Belper hosiery industry;
  • Information about the Strutt family and in particular William Strutt, the inventor of the fire-proof mill with an iron frame;
  • Photographs of mill workers and illustrations of hosiery production.
